Committed to Good Business Ethics

Sustainable Trade Brochure

Through multimedia exhibits, speakers and special events,
IFC and Pangea strive to ensure that the products featured
in the store are produced in a responsible manner.
Artisan suppliers are required to commit to the following
set of principles, broadly based upon those utilized by
leading fair trade organizations.

  • Creating economic opportunities for disadvantaged producers

  • Ensuring transparency and accountability

  • Building capacity and facilitating access to markets

  • Paying a fair price and offering pre-financing to producers

  • Not using child labor

  • Promoting gender equity

  • Providing safe and healthy working conditions

  • Caring for the environment

To put these principles to practice, IFC works with organizations such as Traidcraft
and IFAT to conduct field assessments of artisan compliance.  A customized plan
is then developed to address any areas in need of attention.  IFC and its
partners help the organizations implement the plan through capacity building,
facilitating training and in some cases financing for necessary upgrades.

All artisan suppliers from which Pangea sources directly participate in this process.
Intermediary distributors (such as Aid to Artisans) that source products for the store,
apply their own, generally similar standards and good business ethics.
